More than 100 pairs of rare sneakers signed by Eminem will be auctioned in August to raise funds for the Marshall Mathers Foundation’s programmes that support at-risk and disadvantaged youth in Detroit.
History in shoes
Hip hop and sneaker culture have been intertwined for decades. Some call it an obsession. Artists and fans treat sneakers as art objects, sometimes worth thousands, displaying them on shelves and hunting for rare finds at auctions. Brands collaborate with artists to create limited-edition lines of expensive footwear that never reach the mass market.
Eminem was one of the pioneers in this segment, building a trail of unique designs across different stages of his career, albums, and performances.
Starting with his 2003 collaboration on the Nike Air Max Burst in the “Artist Series”, Eminem amassed a serious collection of unique artefacts. It seems he has now decided that they can serve the community rather than sit in storage.
For the youth
The sale comes nearly 20 years after Eminem’s first charity-only Nike Air Max series, launched in the wake of Proof’s death. Since then, Em has consistently supported charitable causes by selling rare items from his collection. However, this will be the largest single-sale collection of Eminem material ever offered at public auction.
The collection will be sold through Julien’s Auctions with all proceeds benefit the Marshall Mathers Foundation.
According to Paul Rosenberg, President of Shady Records and CEO of Goliath Artists, Inc., “Marshall has always expressed his personal style through his sneakers, and he has amassed quite a collection throughout the years”. He added in Julien’s Auctions announcement: “We are excited to offer an opportunity to own a piece of his personal collection – including some grails – while supporting the cause that is so meaningful to him”.
A treasure trove
As if the collection itself were not enough, the auction house says every lot is hand-signed by Eminem and accompanied by its original box. In rare sneaker sales, a signature and the original box are not always guaranteed. Having both adds to the authenticity and collector value.
