Joan Garcia listens to Eminem before games

Joan García just started playing for Barcelona, but he already commands attention with his impressive reflex saves and ability to withstand the opponents’ relentless attacks. Some of this endurance might be traced to the way he approaches the game.

Winning Ritual

For an athlete, hours of training and strategy meetings are important. But no less important is the state of mind before and during the game. In the interview with the Spanish sports publication Marca, the young goallie explained his pre-game ritual:

Like many, I have my quirks and routines. I like to eat the same thing for dinner the night before; I also like to listen to the same songs when I get off the bus; and then, when I go out onto the field, I lightly touch the three goalposts and the ball. I know that if I follow this routine, I’ll be in the best condition to play. It gives me peace of mind”.

No journalist would resist asking for details: what exactly is his comfort food, and what exactly are the songs that inspire him? And to nobody’s surprise, Marshall’s name comes up:

“The night before, I always have some salmon with rice and egg for dinner. And before the match, I always listen to the same two songs: “Not Afraid” by Eminem and “Live Your Life” by Rihanna. I like doing it, that’s all; there’s no great secret to it”.

Motivational Boost

Indeed, there is no secret that many athletes choose Eminem when they seek an energy and motivation boost. Be it in the weight room, before hitting the field, or after the game, celebrating victory, Em has a song for everyone. And with Joan García, his ritual seems to be working. At his young age, he ranks among the best players, posting a save percentage over 80% and a clean sheet percentage over 50%. And he is not afraid to take a step.
