One of the youngest comedians to ever join the SNL cast, Pete Davidson, talked about loving Eminem’s music from an early age and getting praise from Em.
Pete sat down with Kevin Hart to talk about his career, mental health, and what the future holds for him. The actor mentioned how early he started listening to Slim Shady:
The first record I’ve ever bought was “The Eminem Show”. I was nine. It was sick, a lot of cursing. Loved it. But my mom was like, “You are too young for this. When you are like 12 or whatever, we’ll talk about it”. My mom loved Rod Stewart. So what I did was I made a print, like a Rod Stewart cover, and I pasted it on top of “The Eminem Show”. So my mom would be like, “What are you listening to?” She just must have thought I was a huge Rod Stewart fan.
He mentioned later that his life eventually had made a full circle, allowing him to impersonate his idol in several SNL skits and to chat with Eminem directly.
Pete talked about it in more detail earlier on Late Night with Seth Meyers:
It went, I think, as good as it could go. Those [sketches] were written by the great Dan Bulla and Steven Castillo, great SNL writers, and [Chris] Redd. Eminem said a couple of nice things about me, and I, of course, heard them. I reached out. I was like, “I would just like to say thank you”. And I just hit him up and said thanks, and he was like, “Yeah, man, you really did that. When I saw Stu on the script, I was like, I don’t know how it was going to go, but after you did that, it was fire”. I was like, “Oh, thank you so much, you’re the coolest”, and then I just hung up as quick as possible. That’s all you need. You don’t want anything more.
