In a recent interview, Fifty threw some thick shade on Jay-Z and his place in the culture.
Talking about his relationship with Eminem and how much this association has helped 50 Cent solidify his reputation and success, Fif brought up an unexpected example:
If you look at the Jay-Z career you can say the association to Beyonce is when he started to receive, what, 16, 17 Grammys? Since he’s been with Beyonce. And prior to that — one. That cames in association. Even their kids have Grammys. They don’t sing yet, they don’t rap yet, and they already have Grammys and shit. It’s like they give them this trophy to secure that they come to the award show. It meant so much to the culture that they just gave them the things. To me, I don’t care about trophies. I said, I’ll get the checks.
Fifty understands the power of association and said about himself that he probably wouldn’t had been so commercially successful if he wasn’t associated with Eminem, an artist with phenomenal sales inside and outside of the US. In the case of Jay-Z though, to say that his music accolades have been awarded to him only because of his wife’s side is a mockery. However, we all know how reckless Fif can be when he is in the troll mode.
But at the same time, have you checked Hov’s Grammys list? There are 25. The first, Best Rap Album for “Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life” was received in 1999 in the pre-Beyonce era. Since then, only two, Best Rap Solo Performance for “99 Problems” in 2005 and for “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)” in 2010 are awarded to him. All other Grammys Jay-Z has received in collaboration with other artists, including Beyonce.
