Tory Lanez has released “Dear Kai (Prison Tapes)” from behind bars, remixing Eminem’s “Mockingbird” to deliver a message to his son.
“Dear Kai (Prison Tapes)” borrows the beat and structure of the 2004 hit while putting a personal spin on its lyrics.
The track opens with:
Dear Kai, you know Daddy loves you, right?
From the first line, listeners immediately recognise the familiar melody. The beat remains practically unchanged, and Lanez follows Eminem’s verse-chorus structure while channelling the song’s deeply personal tone. However, where Eminem reflects on his mistakes and struggles as a father, Tory shifts the focus to his legal battle, blaming “powerful people” for his imprisonment and frozen assets.
To accompany the song, Lanez also released a music video that closely mirrors Eminem’s “Mockingbird”. Just like Em’s original, the video is a supercut of home footage, featuring Tory’s son, Kai.
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. A jury convicted him on three felony charges:
– Assault with a semiautomatic handgun
– Possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm
– Gross negligence in discharging a firearm
Regardless of how people view Tory Lanez’s situation, one thing is evident — “Mockingbird” has become the ultimate anthem of a father’s love. Its lasting impact continues, even in unexpected places.
