The leaked Scream 6 trailer promises a movie that crosses every line, is drenched in blood, full of brutal jokes, and features Eminem’s music.
Everybody Screams
The shaky video from a pre-screening appeared online ahead of the planned release. Still, it sparked interest and discussion just as well as a precisely timed event. Even from a two-minute trailer, it is evident that no recent horror movie is safe. The Brothers Wayans, who stand behind the franchise’s success, spoof everything: M3GAN, Heart Eyes, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Weapons, Longlegs, Get Out, Sinners, The Substance, Terrifier 3, Wednesday, Halloween 2018, Smile, and certainly many, many more.
In the fast moving trailer, one hot topic after another is singled out, turned upside down, and punched in the face. Racism, right-wing narrative, gender expression, pronouns, queerness, ageism, you name it. And, of course, sex and violence. The movie’s tagline reads: “Every line will be crossed”.
Guess Who’s Back
Obviously, there is only one song that could fuse perfectly with this movie and this message: “Without Me”. Eminem’s most streamed song that approaches 3 billion plays milestone. Bravely, the creators made this choice, pairing Slim’s sardonic anthem with a sequence designed to irritate everyone. Truly, this is a match made in heaven.
The franchise is going to come back after 11 years of absence, after leaving quietly following the moderate success of Scream 5. Clearly, Slim’s “Guess who’s back” aligns with the message they want to send to the public,
Slim Shady made it his life’s mission to push buttons and drag uncomfortable topics into the spotlight. Oscillating between horror core and merciless satire, he made the whole world wince and laugh at the same time. So, if this is the benchmark, the level of provocation the creators are aiming at, we are in for a treat.
And of all people, Eminem’s fans know how to handle an offensive gag without flinching. Slim Shady has taught us how to read between the lines and look under the surface years ago.
