Kanye’s fallout drastically changed the hip hop moguls’ list. The presence of Jay-Z and Dr. Dre is constant, as well as the steady growth of the hip hop wealthiest artists’ combined assets.
The top 5 acts together are worth $3.8 billion combined now, 20 per cent more than before the pandemic.
While Kanye’s worth dropped unimaginably after all his significant business partners parted ways with him because his hare speech made him a liability, he was able to maintain his place in the top 5. However, the liquidity of his assets is as problematic as his worldview. Zack O’Malley Greenburg, a former senior editor with Forbes who used to publish these lists regularly, admits that it is not easy to estimate Ye’s wealth at the moment but shows an effective methodology he used for his latest ranking.
Diddy finally made it to the billionaire territory and occupied No.2, right behind Jay-Z, whose diverse portfolio provided him with over $1.5 billion. No.4 belongs to Gilbert “Berner” Milam, who made $410 million off his cannabis empire. Dr. Dre, who topped the Forbes list in late 2019. slid down to No.5 with just $400 million. Dre’s wealth didn’t have to be estimated by a complicated algorithm and was taken right from his divorce papers and adjusted by deducting half of the settlement money.
So, here it is, the Hip-Hop’s Wealthiest Artists 2022 list as presented by Zack O’Malley Greenburg, a former Forbes editor and Jay-Z biographer:
1. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter ($1.5 billion)
2. Sean “Diddy” Combs ($1 billion)
