Grammy-winning hip hop artist opened up about her time with Aftermath when Dr. Dre signed Eve at the beginning of her career.
Eve is featured in a five-part docuseries “Ruff Ryders Chronicles” that presents the history of the iconic Hip Hop label Ruff Ryders Entertainment. On episode 2 of the series Eve spoke about the excitement of being recognised by Dr. Dre as an artist with potential:
I went from being at home at my mom’s house to taking a flight to LA so that I could record a demo to play for Dre. I will never forget after I recorded this demo, Dre heard it and was like, “Let’s make a deal”.
Eve started working with Dre in the studio until all of a sudden their sessions stopped. All progress was halted and Eve could not find any explanation for this change. She recalls:
I remember that when I was working with Dre, Eminem did get signed. So I would literally show up to studio sessions that I wasn’t supposed to be at, where I knew Dre was going to be, and be like, “When am I recording? When are you going to put me on a song? What’s going on?”
I think he got sick of that. And I got dropped eight months later.
That concludes Eve’s brief history with Aftermath that preceded her later success. Next year she released her 1999 debut “Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady” that peaked at the Billboard 200 No.1 – that was only the third time in history for a female hip hop artist to achieve this height.
