The Internet exploded last week when Birdman demanded that The Breakfast Club hosts Charlamagne Tha God, Angela Yee and DJ Envy “put some respek” on his name before walking out on his interview.
In a conversation with The Brilliant Idiots, Charlamagne gives some context to what happened that day. He explains that the Cash Money CEO was an hour late to the show. When he finally did arrive, he was listening to a song that is commonly known as a hype track.
“This is no lie, Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ was playing,” the radio personality says. “I don’t know where it was coming from. I don’t know if it was on the radio. I don’t know if it was on his headphones. I don’t know what it was, but Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ was playing. I’m dead-ass serious. I’m not making this up. Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ was playing. He walks in, he goes, ‘Y’all ready?’ And then that’s what y’all saw.”
Charlamagne, who brushed off a reported apology from Birdman, says that this experience made him realize how a generational change has happened in rap.
“After that situation, it really made me appreciate Kendrick Lamar more,” he says. “It made me appreciate J. Cole. It made me appreciate Wale. It made me appreciate Drake. That 1990s rapper bully shit is dead. That shit looks so stupid. Nothing looks worse than an angry old rapper. That shit is wack. Knock it off already. You’re too smart, clearly Birdman because you made hundreds of millions of dollars. You’re too smart to still be moving like that.”
