You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who can challenge Eminem’s self-appointed “Rap God,” but crafting lyrics isn’t the only thing that come easy to Slim Shady; he’s also a master of music videos and quirky pop culture references.
For his upcoming “Rap God” video, Em channels 1980s television character Max Headroom, as shown in the teaser dropped Thursday night.
The 26-second clip covers the song’s intro, which samples a 1970s Captain America audio book. “I was going to go easy on you, not to hurt your feelings,” Em mouths the words, while making spastic jerks that mimic the original Headroom character.
Headroom was a futuristic, computer-generated television played by Canadian actor Matt Frewer. The “Max Headroom” show was a hit for two seasons in 1987 and 1988 and the character was even used to in a 1980s Coca-Cola campaign. Em isn’t the first rapper to channel Max. In 2011, Lil Wayne got the MH treatment in a spot used to promote the MTV Video Music Awards.
It’s unclear if Em will pull any other pop-culture references out when the “Rap God” video officially debuts, but it’s safe to assume that Slim Shady may take on a variety of looks. In the past videos, he has taken on the likeness of stars and characters like Michael Jackson, Marilyn Manson, Elvis Presley, Tom Green, MC Hammer, Pee Wee Herman and comic-book hero Robin.
