Eminem and Spike Lee Teaming Up for ‘Headlights’ Video

Eminem and Spike Lee are teaming up on a new video. The rapper revealed over the weekend that the Do the Right Thing director is working with him in Detroit on the video for “Headlights,” the fifth single off The Marshall Mathers LP2.

Eminem spread the news by tweeting out a photo of himself with Lee on Saturday afternoon, writing “Spike came out to The D for the “Headlights” video. . . . Coming soon.” Later that day, Spike Lee sent out the same photo, with the caption “Detroit’s Finest EMINEM And Me Working Together On His Short a Film.Historic. Who Woulda Thunk It.”

It should be interesting to see what Lee does with “Headlights,” an emotionally searing song in which Eminem apologizes to his mother, Debbie Mathers, and describes his feelings of “overwhelming sadness” as he watched her drive away after their last meeting. Fun.’s Nate Ruess sings the wrenching chorus on the song, which was released in February.

Though known best for his feature films and documentaries, Lee is a music video veteran, having helmed classic clips for Naughty By Nature’s “Hip Hop Hooray,” Arrested Development’s “Revolution,” Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power,” Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us,” among others.
