Eminem’s latest release, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)”, can tell a very different story when played in reverse. And maybe promises a sequel.

The album has sparked a firestorm of fan theories, particularly surrounding its concept and the potential hidden narrative that unfolds when you flip the song order.

Eminem himself emphasised the importance of listening to the album in particular order, tweeting, “Public service announcement: the ‘death of slim shady’ is a conceptual album, therefore, if you listen to songs out of order they might not make sense. Enjoy”. He hinted that listening to the album in reverse offers a different story.

This cryptic message inspired one fan, @Pecora_boy123, to offer a mind-bending theory: the entire album tells a different story when played backwards.

According to this theory, “The Death of Slim Shady” chronicles a dark twist: Eminem, not Slim Shady, dies. Songs like “Somebody Save Me” foreshadow Marshall’s demise, while tracks like “Guilty Conscience 2” and “Breaking News” depict Slim Shady taking control and revelling in the chaos he’s unleashed.

The story takes a sinister turn with “Trouble Skit”, where Shady supposedly drugs Marshall. This leads to “Renaissance”, where Slim spits venomously over Marshall’s “grave” and unleashes pure, unadulterated Slim Shady fury on the world.

Here is how the new story goes:

Somebody Save Me: Foreshadows Marshall’s death.
Guess Who’s Back: Hints at Slim Shady’s return.
Tobey: Reflects on failures and the return of Shady.
Bad One: Indicates Marshall’s job is done.
Temporary: A letter to Hailie hinting at his end.
Head Honcho: References the story of Ezekiel and creation day, symbolising the birth of Slim Shady.
Guilty Conscience 2: Slim Shady laughs, proving it wasn’t a dream.
Breaking News: Shady shows Marshall the chaos he has started.
Houdini: Paul thinks Marshall is on a tangent.
Road Rage: Slim dyes Marshall’s hair blonde again.
Fuel: References the Reaper coming.
Antichrist: Slim Shady’s darker thoughts.
Lucifer: Switches between Marshall and Slim, setting up the finale.
All You Got: Slim tells Marshall he’s nothing without him.
Evil: Slim fully takes over.
Brand New Dance: Slim mocks Marshall.
Trouble Skit: Slim drugs Marshall.
Habits: Marshall struggles while tied up.
Renaissance: Slim buries Marshall and spits on his grave.

This theory paints a chilling picture, suggesting that Slim Shady, the dark persona fuelling Eminem’s success, may have staged his own demise to unleash a new era of mayhem.

However, this new story has the potential to flip the script again. Left on a cliffhanger, as at the end of Season 1 of a thrilling TV show, the story leaves room for Side B of the album to come out and show Eminem emerging from the grave to take his revenge on Slim Shady.

So, will we see Side B? Could it be Eminem’s retaliation against Slim’s attempted takeover? This perspective is thrilling and not exactly out of the realm of possibilities.
