In the world of music production, some collaborations are carefully orchestrated, while others happen purely by chance. For American songwriter, producer, and audio engineer Jameil Aossey, his latest work on Eminem’s “The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)” came about through a simple misunderstanding — one that he’s more than happy didn’t get corrected.

Aossey, known for his work with Symbolyc One (S1) and contributions to artists like Little Mix and Beyoncé, recently shared the story of how his beat ended up on Eminem’s track “Head Honcho”. In a recent interview with Studio Talks, Aossey explained how a misread file name led to his unexpected collaboration with one of the greatest rappers of all time.

“The track was made around May of last year, 2023. I sent it to my manager, and he hit me back, saying, ‘Man, this is perfect for Eminem. Good thing you marked it’. And I was like, ‘What do you mean I marked it? I put ‘Em’ because it’s in E minor’”, Aossey shared. The “Em” tag was simply a note about the song’s key, not a reference to Marshall Mathers himself.

Despite the mix-up, Aossey’s manager sent the track to Eminem’s team, and within days, they expressed interest. What started as a small mishap turned into a full-fledged collaboration.

“We were just like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me; that’s how it happened?’” Aossey said, reflecting on the surreal turn of events.

It wasn’t until just before the album’s release that Aossey got official confirmation that “Head Honcho” would indeed be featured, with Ez Mil providing the hook. “You really don’t know until midnight the night it drops whether you actually made it onto the album”, he said, emphasizing how uncertain the process can be.

Now, Aossey’s name sits proudly among the credits for Eminem’s latest project, and what began as an accidental misunderstanding has become one of his biggest career highlights. Sometimes, in the world of music, the best collaborations come from the unexpected.
