Celebrating the 17th anniversary since the release of the most decorated Eminem’s single “Lose Yourself”, let’s remember some facts about this incredible record.
1. “Lose Yourself” was written for the soundtrack to the 2002’s “8 Mile”. While Em recycled the old beat he had unreleased, the lyrics were written between breaks on the shooting set. Eminem recalled later:
We filmed half of it in the dead of winter. We had a music trailer on set, designed like a studio. One trailer was music, and we had another with gym equipment in it.
We were on lunch break, and I needed to finish the track. I don’t think it was one take all the way down, but it was one take each verse. “Got the first verse, okay, punch me in at the second. OK, the whole third verse.” For some reason, I just captured something there that I didn’t want to change. I remember trying to change it and go back and re-do the vocals, and I was like “Yo, let me listen to the old ones? Just keep the old ones, fuck it.
2. It became the first rap song to win the Oscar.
3. “Lose Yourself” received two Grammys – as the Best Male Rap Solo Performance and the Best Rap Song.
4. This track became Eminem’s first Number 1 in the US. Overall, it reached Number 1 in 20 different countries.
5. Last year it was certified as Diamond (10xMultiPlatinum) in the US. Which is a direct consequence of it being the best selling rap song, best selling single of the pre-streaming era and the most-streamed song of the 2000s.
