Tuesday 20th August 2013. That was the night the city of Glasgow, Scotland witnessed its greatest ever Hip-Hop show and one that will go down in Glasgow Music History.
It was Eminem’s first appearance in the city in 10 years where he had previously headlined Hampden Park in the summer of 2003. A stadium that has hosted three UEFA Champions League Finals (Two Of which Real Madrid won) and a UEFA Europa League Final.
But it was an overcast evening in August of 2013 at Glasgow’s Bellahoustoun Park which saw a Galactico line up.
CHANCE THE RAPPER:
Chicago’s very own Chance The Rapper was first on stage. The rapper at the time was relatively unknown in Scotland but by the end of his set the Glasgow crowd were impressed. Chance has since went on to become a household name and has since returned to Glasgow for a sell out show at the city’s 02 Academy.
YELAWOLF:
Next up after Chance was Shady Records’ Yelawolf. Radioactive had already been released and he performed a good chunk of songs off the project as well as Songs from Trunk Muzik. Again Yelawolf retuned to the city 2 years later performing also at the 02 Academy to promote Love Story.
EARLWOLF:
The line up just kept getting better. This time it was Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler The Creator’s turn to rock the crowd. The duo was handpicked by Eminem himself and went down a storm with the crowd.
KENDRICK LAMAR:
After EarlWolf finished up it was Kendrick’s turn. The Compton rapper had not long dropped Good Kid, Maad City and was in Europe to promote the album. At the time he was still up and coming in the U.K. but after this set his sales climbed in Scotland and has been a fan favourite ever since. 5 years later Kendrick returned to the same site but this time headlining it on his own in front of 25,000 strong crowd.
EMINEM:
Last but certainly not least Marshall Mathers graced the stage to over 35,000 fans. Slim Shady gave fans a fantastic 42 song set beginning with MMLP2 track “Survival” and finished with 8 Mile classic “Lose Yourself” before the show ended Eminem stated that it was one of the liveliest ever shows he had done and announced he would be back. He was correct. He returned in 2017 to the same venue.
