The life of DeShaun Dupree Holton, aka Proof, the Detroit legend, was cut short by a bullet on April 11, 2006.
Proof was in the heart of Detroit hip hop culture from a very early age. In high school, he pushed his childhood friend Marshall Mathers to rap in a canteen, and later, he managed and hosted open mic rap battles in iconic Detroit Hip-Hop Shop. Proof is so often mentioned in one sentence with Eminem or D12 that people often forget how skilful he was as a solo artist, a rapper and lyricist.
Of course, his life, and his tragic death, impacted Eminem’s entire life story, its highs and lows, its whole trajectory. But today, let’s listen to Proof’s solo project.
“Time a Tell” is a unique project released posthumously and created as a bet with producer DJ Jewels Baby. Proof wrote and recorded 20 songs for this album within 24 hours. This album is as raw and honest as you can imagine and as full of life and brilliance as was Big Proof.
