In August 2001, Curtis Hanson and his crew started shooting a landmark rap movie in the streets of Detroit, Michigan.
Back then, it did not yet have the title everybody knows. Almost until the end of filming, the project was still known as UDP: Untitled Detroit Production. Having spent weeks in Detroit, the director came up with the title based on his experience of the city and the importance of 8 Mile to the story and Detroit’s geography and identity.
The movie ended up being one of the most important depictions of hip hop and battle rap culture. This quintessentially Detroit story captured the imagination of audiences around the world. It showed a new facet of Eminem’s talent: he acted like a pro while also putting together a soundtrack for the movie – the soundtrack that made history when “Lose Yourself” became the first hip hop song to win an Academy Award.
The movie changed what hip hop cinema could be. Most of all, is a raw, honest story of an underdog fighting for more than just survival. That’s why so many people still love it.
So, when the X account @25YearsAgoLive, which shares news updates from a quarter century ago, reported on the start of filming, the post blew up with fond memories and jokes about the project’s possible future.
