News broke that 6ix9ine passed through Eminem in gaining the most views for a hip-hop video in 24 hours. The previous record was held by “Killshot” that got 38.1 million views on YouTube on the first day of its release.
New 6ix9ine’s video “Gooba” got 43.5 million. However, numbers mean nothing if you do not put them in the perspective. Let’s do that.
“Killshot” was not even a video. It was a YouTube audio track, a diss track, dropped without a warning, out of the blue.
Meanwhile, 6ix9ine has the biggest clout now, he’s a certified snitch who has taken it on a chin and carries as something he embraces now. He does not let the public to forget about his notoriety, he pushes it up, he even goes around leaving comments on gossip accounts – and now he capitalising in this clout. Also, his video is a perfect honey trap, full of colourful twerking ladies, whom you will remember longer than the song itself. And finally, everybody is sitting in lockdown with not much to do and this video was like a culmination of a long TV drama, months of build-up came to a climax with this outburst.
Also, this song is not hip-hop. It’s a car crash you would rather didn’t see at all but it’s difficult to turn away. Let’s see how many people will come back for seconds.
